Home insurance FAQs

Here are some of the popular questions people have about home cover with AXA.

  • Although home insurance is not required by law, many mortgage providers will require you to have buildings insurance in order to receive your loan. This is to make sure your building is protected which helps protect their investment.

For most people, their home is their most valuable asset, which is why it's important to have it protected.

Without home insurance, in the event of any incident you may be left to pay out of pocket, which often can be quite a financial burden.

Our Home Insurance policies help protect you, your home and all your belongings from the unexpected giving you the peace of mind that we are always here to help.

  • Yes, our standard Home Insurance policy with buildings and contents cover also extends to any outbuildings located on your property, which also includes the structure and the contents of your garage or shed.

You'll find more details in your policy booklet.

  • We just need to know some basics about your home in order to give you a quote. These include:

    • The address
    • Type of home
    • Number of bedrooms
    • When it was built
    • The type of heating your home has.
    • Estimated cost of rebuilding the home
    • The amount you’d like to insure your contents for (If choosing Buildings & Contents or Contents only.)
  • The standard excess on our Home Insurance policy is £50. Claims for the escape of water are subject to £300 excess and subsidence claims have an excess of £1000.

You can also opt for an additional voluntary voluntary excess in return for a premium reduction. The excess amount is noted on your Schedule, which you can view through your MyAXA account. To register for MyAXA, please visit here.

You’ll find more details in your policy booklet.

  • When you're buying home insurance, the amount you should insure your building for, should be the rebuild value of your property. The rebuild value of your property is the amount of money it would take to rebuild your home from scratch - not the market value of your home if you were to sell it.

When calculating the rebuild value you will need to take into account the price of labour and materials, along with the cost of the site clearance, and architect fees. The calculation should also include any outbuildings/ sheds boundary walls located on your property.

Please note: That the current market value of your home is not the rebuilding cost of the property, as it takes into account the land on which your home is built.

If in doubt we recommend visiting the Association of British Insurers website and using their calculator to work out the rebuilding cost.
